Weather does it again..
But this time it was not the usual flat current free seas, but rather strong wind that blew the whole four days that the team spent in Bermagui.
The only dive of the expedition was on the Bega in less than ideal conditions after a failed attempt to go out to the William Dawes.
The wind was calmer on Saturday so the the team went out to attempt to dive on the W.D, but as the boat approached the site seas were looking rough with 3 metres swell and building wind.
The weather condition was looking to get worst before it got better, and with over four hours of deco the dive was out of the question. The team decided to recover the shot that was laid on the wreck earlier, and then steam to the site of the Bega to recover the shot that was on it.
On approaching the site of the Bega the seas were actually looking much better. We decided to do a short dive with 20 minute bottom time.
The current was strong on the surface when the deco lines were deployed, and water was not the blue colour as we saw out wider. There was a very think layer of algae up to 20 metres. The water temperature below this layer dropped down to 12C!
Water was clear on the bottom with at least 20 metres visibility but dark. The dive went well but very clod and we were safely back on the boat for the last time.
This is the first time in 3 years of diving on the south coast that we were blown out, and we only hope our next attempt for May is a better one.
