A team of four Sydney Project members have dived on what may be the most significant find to date.
The team descended to 125 metres to what is thought to be the wreck of the Australian cargo steamer SS Iron Knight built in 1937. The steamer was en route from Whyalla to Newcastle with a load of iron ore when it was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine in the early hours of 8 February 1943. Of the fifty crew on board only fourteen survived after being rescued from a raft by the French warship Le Triomphant.
The team landed next to the bridge area which is in the middle of the wreck, and found it to be covered by thick trawl nets. The cargo holds in front and behind the bridge are huge in size, and the wreck is upright and intact.
No positive identification was found and the team will be returning to the site in 2 weeks time with scooters to confirm its’ identification.
