William Dawes/Bega 2005 expedition - 18-April-2005 @ 5:25:02 PM
First official Sydney Project expedition for the year, to survey both wrecks.

A new more advanced approach will be taken on this latest expedition, to the wrecks of the William Dawes, and the Steamer Bega.

Three divers will dive the William Dawes on Friday 22nd April, using closed circuit rebreathers, and scooters. One of the scooters will have a mounted video camera to film the wreck.

The objective of this latest survey, is to identify the layout of the wreck, and how it's laying on the bottom.

The divers will also try to film the stern area, and survey the torpedo damage, as described by eye witness accounts.

Over the next two days, the team will be diving the Steamer Bega. The objective is to find any debris field away from the wreck, and film any atrifacts in this area. Further objectives are to look for the bell of the ship, it's telegraph, and document the impact of divers on the wreck.

A full report with images will be posted after the expedition.

Update: Divers complete a successfull expedition - 26-April-2005 @ 4:40:12 PM

Team members of the Sydney Project have verified that the William Dawes is on it's side, and intact.

Three divers, Samir Alhafith, Dave Apperley and Paul Garske, completed the dives in just over four and a half hours, without any issues with decompression.

Team reported that the wreck is possibly on it's port side, with a huge gun was seen by Paul, which seems to indicate that this is the bow of the wreck.

Divers had very limited time on the wreck due to the shot line being dragged some 140 metres of the wreck.

Other team members, Mark Spencer and Peter Szyszka, dived the Bega over the two days, with further atrifacts found.

Full report will be released shortly.
